Susan Stitham

Susan spoke about the Essential Learning Pyramid and the 3 level model of comprehension. Please add your thoughts about her presentation and how it may apply to your situation. Or, if you want to apply some of what she talked about, do it as a sonnet, from the perspective of Huck Finn, or through another connection. Actually, in the sake of time, your analysis can also be straight forward if you so choose.

Susan Stitham’s energy and enthusiasm is palpable even through the limited access provided by audio-conference. I enjoyed hearing her ideas for bringing balance to learning and ensuring students get to the level of synthesis with their understanding. Her explanation of activities with familiar and unfamiliar material makes sense, that students need something novel paired with something familiar, in order to maintain interest, connection, and challenge. Making connections with students is key to engaging them in their own learning.
I plan to use some of her specific strategies, like the final exam wherein student draw a question from a can. One of my colleagues does a similar activity, so I can connect closer with her in pursuit of details. I already conduct the Fish Bowl discussions, which for me were born of necessity; it’s difficult with a large class to provide everyone with an opportunity to talk during a single class period. I expand the activity by having students take notes on their peers’ discussions and evaluating their use of strong discussion skills, including demonstrating critical analysis.
Susan brings a fresh point of view that speaks to experience and expertise. It is clear that she enjoy teaching and has a great deal to offer both new and experienced teachers.
